Greetings! As we celebrate this special season of the year with family and friends, let us be ever thoughtful of the many and varied blessings we have received. Some are common to us all, and others are unique to us individually. We all have many blessings, even though they may be very different.
During the holiday season, I hope you take the opportunity to reflect on the past year. I find if I focus on the truly important positive things, they, by far, outweigh the negative. In so doing, I am sure you will agree it has truly been a good year.
Our association has been blessed in numerous ways this year. One of the most important is the caring, thoughtful, and efficient staff who work with us at the KDA office. Thank you Mike, Janet, Judy, Melissa & Todd for your unselfish service.
As I reflected on the past year, I thought about how our association has impacted our communities and our state. We have planned, organized, and implemented four RAM projects. The Remote Area Medical Projects have served many and addressed the dental health concerns of a large number of our Kentucky citizens. This effort has included not only volunteer dentists and hygienists, but also students from both of our dental schools. We have staffed numerous volunteer free clinics that have contributed to the dental health of those less fortunate. I would also mention the individual acts of compassion we all do on a regular basis in our individual offices. Through these efforts, we have made a difference.
We have also volunteered to staff health fairs, dental screening clinics, and out-reach health programs which provide, in some instances, the initial contact for patients with a dental professional. We are truly a compassionate profession.
This time of year has traditionally been a time not only for reflection, but also a time to put forth resolutions. Taking time to do both is not only good for the soul, but also good for the heart.
As the New Year approaches and I reflect on the past collective efforts, I wish to inform you that we have more great moments ahead! One of these will be the beginning of dental screening for all school age children in 2010. As you remember, the state legislature passed our dental screening bill and this is the year it is slated for implementation. As more information becomes available from the state, the KDA will keep us informed and work to coordinate these efforts.
Another collective effort which will occur this year is a RAM project scheduled for Louisville’s Freedom Hall in mid-September. This project has the potential to provide dental services for as many people as all the RAM projects held in Kentucky thus far. When the date is finalized, please put this on your calendar and plan to participate—it will be a project with great impact.
My wish to each of you is to have a Happy Holiday as you celebrate in your own special ways. If I may borrow a phrase from a Christmas classic, “May God bless us every one”.
